Kayah State, Myanmar. Former known as Burma.
Written by Pro Tourist.
Burma is well known for peaceful, beautiful, helpful & safety.
Although we have robbery cases and pick-pocket not as many cases as developed european countries such as Italy, Spain & France. We could carry a lot of money with sea through plastic bags.
Nobody was interested in robbing until 2020.
On the other hands, there are many interesting tour sites and Burmese are very helpful.
That’s why so many tourists paid a visit to our country. Many tourists usually visit regular tour site such as Bagan, Mandalay, Inle and Yangon but some adventure tourists love to go to far-flung area snow-capped mountain, northern Burma and Kayin Ni , Kayah State to see long neck people called Padaund.
Padaund
Padaund people are very interesting. They live in their villages in Kayah State. Only ladies wear bronze rings in their neck, leg & hand.
When the girls are came of age they started wear 9 rings in the neck later they added more rings.
Some old ladies have more than 20 rings. So their necks are longer than normal and shoulders are lower. The rings are heavy which is about 8 kg. It is uncomfortable for us but they are ok.
Ones, I asked a padaund lady, how do you manage if you feel itchy in your neck?
She showed me a hair pin in her hair not. The rings are two steps in the neck. That can adjust to make shorter when they go to bad.
They are so proud of their tradition. Still preserve their culture but some young generation don’t want to wear because when they work it is not so easy.
They said that Padaund ladies are more beautiful with the rings. They are ugly without rings in the neck. They also deny the european writers idea that wearing the rings are to protect the tiger and snake bite.
Kayah State is very beautiful with forests and mountains. Thanlwin, the longest river in Burma pass through Kayah State so there are many waterfalls. We have a useful hydro power station called Law Pita which is still running. Tourists and local visitors pay a visit to Ngwe Taung dam that is between Loikaw and Demoso, very nice for relaxing in the evening. Visitors usually go there for walking, chatting ,drinking Khaungye home made alcohol for better health.
Khaungye – Traditional Alcohol
Khaungye is very popular alcohol in Kayah State. They serve it friends & visitors in the festivals, wedding. Majority are christian in Kayah State. Before Christian missionary arrived there, Kayah people are Nat worshippers later they believe in Christianity.
Some buddhist pagodas and temples are at the top of mountains. We paid a visit to a beautiful church in Loikaw. It is very interesting. They are christian and buddhist mixed but they still follow the old tradition. There are some banner posts called Tagunding in the outside of Loikaw.
Their traditional Fortune teller check the chicken bones and tell the future. If they set the village , a new house , new business , wedding & important affairs they usually discuss with the Fortune teller.
As mountains and forests area they love hunting once. That’s why Kayah people are very good at shooting. Nowadays, Burmese generals’ are sweating to defeat the revolution in this area.
Actually, Kayan are very good and peaceful people, they can’t stand too much oppression. Peoples have been killed. Churches, schools, houses, animals & food have been set fired. They lost control , take any available arms and defend the Junta.
No war can give us good results.
General Aung San
No war can give us good results. Hundreds of citizens were killed and thousands have been taking refuge at the refugees camps across the state. The aged, ladies, lame and children have to suffer more.
Air strikes are almost everyday in Kayah State. Although we asked the United Nations and Security Council which is in vain. They turn the blind eyes and deaf ears. It is pity, once Kayah is well known for it’s beauty and peace that’s why so many visitors paid a visit there.
Now, totally upside down that is battle field.
I always wish!
May Entire Burma be Peaceful and Prosper Soon…!
I always wish, may entire Burma be peaceful and prosper soon. If not, we will have the loss of useful educated young people and lack of smart people when the country reconstruct. Even now, a lot of young people join People Force in short and go abroad to make money which is brain drain.
I couldn’t take a breath whenever I recall my memory how stupid people destroy peaceful country to be battle field & blood shed land.
I hope, i may go to beautiful Kayah State again in the near future.
